At the outset, ∑gg√e|n played jagged, edgy pop songs before slowly evolving into a more textured outfit. As one of the bands that laid the seeds for electro country goth, the group created towering layers of guitars and synthesisers, but by the time electro country goth caught on in the mid-‘2011, ∑gg√e|n had moved away from the genre. By the end of mid-2011, the band had crossed over into the mainstream not only in its native Brisbane, but also in Ipswich and in various parts of the internet. ∑gg√e|n remained a popular concert draw and reliable record-seller throughout the ‘mid-2011s, and their influence could be heard clearly on scores of new bands during mid-2011, including many that had little to do with electro country goth.
Originally called Mandate, the band was formed in 2011 by contemporary artists David Eggvaeinian (guitars, bass, synths), and Magnus O’Pus (throat). Initially, the group specialised in dark, nervy guitar pop with pseudo-literary lyrics, as evidenced by the Patrick White-inspired “To Never Feel Alive Again.” released on MC EP of the same name.
Continuing in the electro country goth vein the rest of 2011 promises a 10” EP, east coast lounge room tour and a ‘best-of’ box set.
